CImplement Dive Deep Intensive Reading

Dive Deep into the Text

Why The Ends Of Samoan Houses Are Round

I decided to do another intensive close reading activity using the same text type, Myth and Legend. I again used the dive-deep approach with similar outcomes. I thought it would be helpful for my learners to repeat what we just did on the same text type.

Reading Activities

1. Read the text using the following Reading Strategies

Why The Ends Of Samoan Houses Are Round.

During the time of Tagaloalagi the houses in Samoa varied in shape and this lead to many difficulties for those who wished to have a house built in a certain manner. Each carpenter was proficient in building a house of one particular shape only and it was sometimes impossible to obtain the services of the carpenter desired.
A meeting of all the car/pen/ters in the country was held to try and decide on some uniform shape. The discussion waxed en/thu/si/as/tic and as there seemed no pro/spect of a decision being arrived at it was decided to call in the ser/vi//ces of Tagaloalagi.
After con/si/de/ring the matter he pointed to the dome of Heaven and to the ho/ri/zon and he decreed that in future all houses built would be of that shape and this explains why all the ends of Samoan houses are as the shape of the heavens extending down to the horizon.

Prediction
When making predictions, students envision what will come next in the text, based on their prior knowledge.

Predicting is an important reading strategy. It allows students to use information from the text, such as titles, headings, pictures and diagrams to anticipate what will happen in the story (Bailey, 2015).
